Ade’s Philosophy Column

Hi, Ade Fell here again !

As you may have remembered, last issue I was in hospital, but now I'm back. I did however find out that white was white and black was in fact black, but anyway, this issue, I am going to tell you about colour perception ! This thesis is primarily for my more advanced readers.

Colour perception, as you know, is when you see a colour and recognise it as being a certain colour. But I ask you, how the devil do I know that when I see the colour which I see as a red colour, that even though you also call it red, it is the same red colour that I can see ? I mean, I may see the colour as red, but you may see it as the colour blue and we could still both call it red.

On the other hand, which is a sort of browny-pink colour in my mind, but may be the colour green that I see, in your mind, the colours might be, say, instead of red in my mind being the equivalent of blue

in your mind, there might be a cyan colour in my mind, that we all call cyan, but if I was to see from your mind, I might see a sort of dirty brown colour.

You see, just because we call a colour a certain name, it doesn't mean that the colour that we see is the same as the colour that someone else sees, in spite of the fact that we call it the same name. We could

actually call a colour 'Bob Mitchell', and everyone would see the shade of the colour and say, "look, that's Bob Mitchell." However, lots of people would look for a man and would be really disappointed at not seeing anyone, and it could cause confusion.

Sceptics say that this is bull because as we know, some red colours are 'so called' warm colours, and blues etc. are cold. They are however wrong, because some people may perceive blues, black and greys, but because the colour is described as warm, they think "what a beautiful warm colour", this would be their on perception.

You must be quite alert about colour perception, as it shows how different we each are on this earth, then again, maybe we see the same colours as each other.

Next issue, I will expand on this theme by discussing the question, Is a white cat, white, in the pitch black, and if it is, how can it ever be proved ?

New Loch Discovered

Ace explorer, Norman Kay (24) has proof that there is in fact a loch in the, until now, uncharted depths of Ulbster.

"It must have been at least half a mile long," he told us, "and there were strange mutant fish in it, ten foot long or my name isn't Norman Kay, explorer extraordinaire."

We at the Churnal are privileged to be able to reveal exclusively the entire diary of his epic quest.

November 10th
Can't believe I'll be setting off in only two days. My thoughts keep turning to what lies ahead of me. Approached William Taylor, the finest guide there is, it will be a huge reassurance if I can persuade him to join me on my quest. Still waiting for news from Virgin records of a possible sponsorship deal.

November 11th
Great news, William Taylor has agreed to guide me through the first leg of the

journey. I am so elated, I determine to set of tomorrow.

November 12th
What a piece of luck, the weather forecast is extremely favourable. We set off early and are currently approaching what is known to the locals as 'ie Rectors bend'. Spirits are high, we are making excellent progress.

November 13th
The omens are not good, a black cat crossed my path today at 'Ie Lith'. Also food supplies are getting low. The summit of 'ie mile road' is visible in the far distance, with luck and gods will we may reach it within the next two days.

November 14th
Alas, the support of my faithful companion William is no longer. He was a tower of strength and will be sadly missed. I awoke this morning to find a note in Williams hand, it simply said "I'm going home for a while, I may be gone some time." My spirits are at a very low ebb today.

November 15th
Reached the summit and had my first view of the unexplored wilderness beyond. I felt a lump in my throat. In the distance the sun appears to be glinting on something. I hardly dare believe that it may be a loch, I feel exhilarated and yet almost lose the resolve to continue my journey, what if I am mistaken?

November 16th
The loch, if indeed it is a loch, is tantalizingly far away. If it's a mirage, I don't believe I will survive, my food has run out and my water supplies are rapidly failing. I am pinning all my hopes now on this loch.

November 17th
Words can't describe my utter delight, all I can say is that this is indeed true, there is a loch. I have named it Loch Wattenan.

If I never make it back, I hope this diary will be found and remain forever testament to human achievement.
